The History and Archaeology of Ancient Carthage

This wiki is dedicated to ancient Carthage, a city on the north coast of Africa, in modern Tunisia. The ancient city was first founded in the eighth century B.C.E., when it was known as Kart Hadasht, "new city." The Punic city was destroyed by the Romans who then refounded it certainly by the time of Augustus. It was the most important city in the Roman province of Africa Proconsularis and became one of the most important cities anywhere in the Roman world. Here we post information about this city for professional archaeologists and historians, for students of archaeology and history, and for interested lay-people.
